Een plant is eigenlijk een klein groen fabriekje. Ze produceren, groeien en wij ademen.
Thylakoïden zijn de kleinste bouwsteen van de fotosynthese. Een plat, schijfvormig ‘zakje’ dat in stapels de zon oogst en water geofferd wordt om zuurstof te baren — de zuurstof die wij nu inademen. Het groene pigment chlorofyl is het bewijs van de ontmoeting tussen licht en materie.
Kijk! Waar de thylakoïden in de natuur microscopisch klein zijn, heb ik ze hier versteend tot monumenten. Deze kleien torens staan te wachten op die ene foton die de chemie in gang zet.
En Luister! Freek Cruysberghs registreert de subtiele trillingen en biosignalen van levende planten en vertaalt deze naar een hoorbaar klanklandschap. Het resultaat is een zintuiglijke ervaring waarin onzichtbare processen en reacties van de plant voelbaar worden in de ruimte.

Les plantes sont en fait de petites usines vertes. Elles produisent, grandissent et nous respirons.
Les thylakoïdes sont les plus petits éléments constitutifs de la photosynthèse. Il s’agit de « poches » plates en forme de disque qui, empilées les unes sur les autres, captent la lumière du soleil et consomment de l’eau pour produire de l’oxygène — l’oxygène que nous respirons aujourd’hui. Le pigment vert, la chlorophylle, est la preuve de la rencontre entre la lumière et la matière.
Regardez ! Là où les thylakoïdes sont microscopiques dans la nature, je les ai ici pétrifiés en monuments. Ces tours d’argile attendent ce photon unique qui déclenchera la chimie.
Et écoutez ! Freek Cruysberghs enregistre les subtiles vibrations et biosignaux des plantes vivantes et les traduit en un paysage sonore audible. Le résultat est une expérience sensorielle qui permet non seulement de voir la photosynthèse, mais aussi de l’« entendre » littéralement dans l’espace.

Thylakoids are the smallest building blocks of photosynthesis. A flat, disc-shaped ‘sac’ that, in stacks, harvests the sun and sacrifices water to produce oxygen — the oxygen we now breathe. The green pigment chlorophyll is the proof of the encounter between light and matter.
Look! Whereas thylakoids are microscopically small in nature, here I have fossilised them into monuments. These small towers await that single photon that sets the chemistry in motion.
And Listen! Freek Cruysberghs records the subtle vibrations and biosignals of living plants and translates them into an audible soundscape. The result is a sensory experience in which you not only see photosynthesis, but can also literally ‘hear’ it in the space.
