Digitale beelden van een phytogram afgedrukt op Japans papier en behandeld met encaustic medium.
Het thema “de chemie van licht en chlorofyl” leidde tot mijn verkenning van het phytogram: een cameraloze fotografische techniek waarbij planten rechtstreeks afdrukken maken op lichtgevoelig papier. Door hun eigen chemische stoffen en pigmenten, met name chlorofyl, ontstaan unieke, organische beelden. Via contact met de fotografische emulsie neemt de plant actief deel aan het ontstaan van een beeld, dat haar unieke aanwezigheid toont en laat zien hoe zij in relatie staat tot haar omgeving.
Vanuit een achtergrond in de botanie groeide de wens om planten niet alleen wetenschappelijk te bestuderen, maar ook artistiek te benaderen. Planten vormen immers de basis van onze ecosystemen. Ik hoop niet alleen hun schoonheid en diversiteit te tonen, maar wil ook hun onvervangbare rol erkennen – het is een gebaar van dankbaarheid aan hen die ons bestaan mogelijk maken.

Images numériques d’un phytogramme imprimées sur papier japonais et traitées à l’encaustique.
Le thème « la chimie de la lumière et de la chlorophylle » m’a amené à explorer le phytogramme : une technique photographique sans appareil photo dans laquelle les plantes produisent directement des impressions sur du papier photosensible. Grâce à leurs propres substances chimiques et pigments, notamment la chlorophylle, des images organiques uniques voient le jour. Par contact avec l’émulsion photographique, la plante contribue activement à la création d’une image qui révèle sa présence unique et montre comment elle s’inscrit dans son environnement.
Issue du domaine de la botanique, j’ai ressenti le désir d’aborder les plantes non seulement sous un angle scientifique, mais aussi artistique. Les plantes constituent en effet la base de nos écosystèmes. J’espère montrer leur beauté et leur diversité, tout en reconnaissant leur rôle irremplaçable — un geste de gratitude envers celles qui rendent notre existence possible.

The theme ‘the chemistry of light and chlorophyll’ led me to explore the phytogram: a camera-less photographic technique in which plants make direct impressions on light-sensitive paper. Their own chemical substances and pigments, particularly chlorophyll, create unique, organic images. Through contact with the photographic emulsion, the plant actively participates in the creation of an image, revealing its unique presence and showing how it relates to its environment.
Drawing on a background in botany, I developed a desire not only to study plants scientifically, but also to approach them artistically. After all, plants form the basis of our ecosystems. I hope not only to showcase their beauty and diversity, but also to acknowledge their irreplaceable role – it is a gesture of gratitude to those who make our existence possible.
